100V Line vs 8 Ohm Speaker Systems Explained
The single most important concept in commercial audio wiring — why most PA systems run at 100V, and when 8 ohms is still the right answer.
Look at the back of any Syskonics amplifier and you will see two kinds of speaker terminal: a 4–16 ohm output, and a set marked COM / 70V / 100V. Those are two entirely different ways of wiring a system, and picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in a PA installation.
This guide explains both, why nearly every building system uses the 100V option, and where low-impedance wiring still belongs.
The problem 100V line solves
Conventional hi-fi wiring is low impedance: an 8 ohm speaker connects directly to an amplifier, and the amplifier delivers whatever power that load draws. That works beautifully for one or two speakers a few metres away. It falls apart across a building.
Two things go wrong. Connect several 8 ohm speakers in parallel and the combined impedance drops — four of them present 2 ohms, which most amplifiers cannot drive safely. And over a long cable run, the resistance of the cable itself becomes significant against an 8 ohm load, so a meaningful share of your power heats the cable instead of moving the cone.
Constant-voltage distribution fixes both. The amplifier puts out a much higher voltage at a much lower current, and each speaker has a small transformer that steps it back down. Lower current means cable losses stop mattering, and because each speaker takes a fixed wattage rather than presenting an impedance, you can hang many of them off one pair of wires.
How to tell which you are looking at
A 100V line speaker is specified in watts with a list of tap options — the SYS-106 quotes 5W, 10W, 20W, 40W and 8 ohm, with a rated voltage of 70V–120V. A low-impedance speaker is specified in ohms — the PS-08 quotes 8 ohms and 150W rated power, with no tap list at all.
Many distributed speakers, including most of the Syskonics wall and ceiling range, include an 8 ohm bypass tap. That lets a single speaker be used conventionally, but it is not how they are normally deployed.

When 8 ohm is the right choice
Low impedance is not obsolete — it is simply for a different job. When you need serious output from one position, a transformer is a bottleneck you do not want. That is why the passive cabinets and the subwoofers in the range are 8 ohm designs: the PS-08 delivers 122 dB maximum SPL, and the SH-15 handles 1000W peak. No 100V line speaker approaches that.
So: use 100V line to cover a building evenly. Use 8 ohms to make one area loud. Systems that need both — a school with corridor paging and an assembly hall PA — simply use both, with separate amplifier outputs.
Wiring practicalities
On a 100V line, speakers are wired in parallel from the COM and 100V terminals. Polarity should be kept consistent throughout so speakers do not cancel each other, and the total of all tap settings must stay within the amplifier's rated output.
Cable size still matters even though losses are lower. Oxygen-free copper is the standard choice; 1.0 sq.mm is fine for short branch runs and 1.5 sq.mm is the safer specification for long runs, higher total power, or any low-impedance wiring.

01What does 100V line mean on a speaker?
It means the speaker has a built-in transformer and is designed for a constant-voltage distribution system. Instead of presenting a fixed impedance, it takes a selectable wattage — its tap — from an amplifier that outputs at 70V or 100V.
02Can I connect an 8 ohm speaker to a 100V output?
No. Connecting a low-impedance speaker directly to the 100V terminals can damage both the speaker and the amplifier. Use the amplifier's 4–16 ohm output for 8 ohm speakers, or use a speaker that has a 100V transformer.
03Why do amplifiers show both 70V and 100V?
They are two constant-voltage standards, and the terminals let one amplifier serve either. 100V is the more common choice in India and much of the world; the principle is identical, and the speakers in this range are rated 70V–120V so they work with both.
04Does 100V line sound worse than 8 ohm?
The transformer does limit low-frequency extension slightly, which is why 100V line speakers are specified for speech and background music rather than full-range music reproduction. For their intended job the difference is not audible; for foreground music, use passive 8 ohm cabinets.
