About wireless microphones

Wireless microphones exist for one reason: the person speaking needs to move. Once that is a requirement — a presenter working a room, a teacher walking between desks, a performer on a stage — no amount of cable management substitutes for it.

Every system here operates on UHF rather than VHF. UHF has more available spectrum, shorter antennas and far less interference from the sources that plague VHF, which is why it is the professional standard. Frequencies range from 610 MHz to 865.6 MHz depending on model.

The practical specifications to compare are channel count, operating range and battery life: 16 or 32 selectable channels here, ranges from 30 m to 100 m, and up to 12 hours of transmitter battery life on the SYS-1004H.

How to choose wireless microphones

More channels means more systems in one room

Each active microphone needs its own clear frequency. A single presenter is fine on any model; a panel discussion or a performance with several microphones needs enough selectable channels to find clear frequencies for all of them. The 32-channel SYS-222 and SYS-222L give the most room to manoeuvre, and the SYS-1004H puts four channels in one receiver.

Range figures are for clear line of sight

The published 30-50 m, 40-80 m, 50-80 m and 80-100 m figures assume open conditions. Walls, metal structure and crowds all reduce it. Specify with margin, and keep the receiver in sight of the performing area rather than in a rack cupboard.

Choose the transmitter type for the job

Handheld suits karaoke, vocals and passing a microphone between speakers. Headset keeps a fixed distance from the mouth and frees both hands, which suits teaching and fitness. Lavalier is the least visible, which suits video and formal presentation. Combination systems such as the SYS-666UHL and SYS-9900-UHL give a handheld and a lapel unit on one receiver.

Check the output connectors against your amplifier

The higher-end systems provide both XLR balanced and 1/4 inch unbalanced outputs, which covers connection to a mixer amplifier or a professional mixer. Confirm what your amplifier's microphone input expects before specifying.

Common questions

01What is the difference between UHF and VHF wireless microphones?

UHF operates at higher frequencies with far more available spectrum, so it supports more simultaneous systems and suffers less interference. VHF is cheaper but is crowded by other services and is much more prone to dropouts. Every wireless system in this range is UHF.

02How far will a wireless microphone work?

It depends on the model and the environment. Published ranges here run from 30-50 m on the compact systems to 80-100 m on the SYS-555 and SYS-9900 series. Those figures assume clear line of sight; walls, metalwork and audiences all reduce them.

03How many wireless microphones can I run at the same time?

Enough for each to sit on its own clear frequency. With 16 or 32 selectable channels there is usually room for several systems in one venue, though local broadcast activity affects how many of those channels are actually usable. For fixed multi-microphone setups, the four-channel SYS-1004H is more practical than four separate receivers.

04How long does the battery last?

Most systems here are rated at up to 8 hours, and the SYS-1004H at around 12 hours. Some models use rechargeable 18650 cells and others standard AA batteries — the type is listed in each product's specifications.
