Designing a public address system that covers classrooms, corridors and assembly areas without being loud in the wrong places.

A school PA system has to do several different jobs from one rack: routine announcements to every classroom, bells and period tones, emergency instructions that must be intelligible everywhere, and sound reinforcement for assemblies and events.

Those jobs pull in different directions, which is why the single most important design decision in a school is zoning. Get that right and the rest follows straightforwardly.

Start by zoning the campus

A zone is any area that needs its own level or needs to be switched off independently. In a typical school that means classrooms as one or more zones, corridors and stairwells as another, staff and administration areas as a third, and outdoor or assembly areas as a fourth.

The reason this matters is that a level set for a noisy corridor is uncomfortable in a staff room, and an announcement that must reach a covered assembly area will be far too loud in a quiet classroom. Zone controller amplifiers solve it: the SA series provides five zones each with an adjustable knob, and the USB-800F provides eight zones with switches.

  • Classrooms — moderate level, often subdivided by floor or block
  • Corridors and stairwells — higher level, more ambient noise
  • Staff and administration — low level, frequently muted
  • Assembly and outdoor areas — highest level, used intermittently

Speaker considerations

Classrooms with a false ceiling take ceiling speakers, which give even coverage and stay out of reach. Classrooms with hard or high ceilings — common in older school buildings — take wall mount speakers instead, mounted above head height and angled towards the desks.

Corridors are almost always wall mount, spaced along the length rather than concentrated at one end. Two or three speakers at a 10W tap will always be more intelligible than one at 40W.

For covered outdoor areas and open walkways, the water-resistant wall models — SYS-401, SYS-501 and SYS-601 — are the appropriate specification. For open landscaped grounds, the garden speaker range is designed for it.

Amplifier considerations

Size the amplifier from the total of every speaker tap, plus 20 to 30 percent headroom. A building with twenty-four speakers averaging 15W is a 360W load, which points at the 500W SA-500VCM rather than the 350W model.

Beyond raw power, look for the features that a school actually uses daily. The SA series includes a CHIME button for announcement pre-tones, which makes routine paging far more listenable than a voice arriving unannounced. Bluetooth, FM and USB or SD playback cover assembly music and recorded material without a separate media player.

For systems that run all day, protection specification matters. The USB-800F lists full protection covering short circuit, overload, over current and DC fault — worth having on a system nobody is watching.

Microphone considerations

The office needs a fixed announcement microphone. A gooseneck such as the SYS-E66, with its cardioid pattern and touch on/off, or a table unit such as the SYS-D27, both suit a permanent desk position and reject sound from behind.

Assemblies and events need something that moves. A UHF wireless system gives the speaker freedom across a hall — the SYS-555 and SYS-9900 series cover 80 to 100 metres, which comfortably spans an assembly hall or a sports ground.

For individual classrooms without an installed system, a self-contained teaching microphone is often the more practical answer. The SYS-16WL is wireless with about four hours of battery life; the SYS-16L is wired and runs continuously from mains power.

Getting emergency announcements right

Whatever else the system does, an emergency instruction has to be understood everywhere. That argues for more speakers at lower levels rather than fewer at higher levels, because intelligibility comes from direct sound rather than volume.

It also argues for keeping the announcement microphone on a priority input where possible, and for making sure no zone can be switched off in a way that silences a whole occupied area.

Common questions

01How many speakers does a school PA system need?

It depends on room sizes and ceiling heights, but plan for at least one speaker per classroom, two for larger rooms, and speakers spaced every 10 to 15 metres along corridors. More speakers at lower taps always gives better intelligibility than fewer at higher taps.

02What size amplifier does a school need?

Total the tap settings of every speaker and add 20 to 30 percent. A small school with 24 speakers at around 15W each totals 360W, which suits a 500W amplifier. A larger campus may need the 800W USB-800F or multiple amplifiers.

03Can different areas have different volumes?

Yes, and they should. A zone controller amplifier gives each area its own level control — five zones on the SA series, eight on the USB-800F — so the corridor can be loud while the staff room stays quiet.

04Do we need separate equipment for the assembly hall?

Often yes. Distributed 100V line speakers are ideal for announcements but limited for assemblies with music or a large audience. A pair of passive cabinets such as the PS-08 on stands, driven from their own amplifier channel, handles that far better.
