How to Match an Amplifier With Your Speakers

A worked power budget, from counting speakers to picking a model — plus the headroom rule that keeps a system sounding clean.

Amplifier and speaker matching sounds like it should be complicated. On a 100V line system it is arithmetic, and this guide walks through it with a real example.

The one rule to carry away: total your speaker taps, then buy an amplifier comfortably larger than that total. Everything else is detail.

Step 1 — List every speaker and its tap

Go room by room. For each space, decide how many speakers it needs and what tap each will run at. If you are not sure what tap to use, the wattage guide covers that in detail; as a starting point, 10W for quiet rooms, 20W for classrooms and retail, 40W for corridors and halls.

Step 2 — A worked example

Take a small school building: six classrooms, a corridor, a staff room and a covered assembly area.

Step 3 — Add headroom and choose the amplifier

The connected load is 380W. Adding 30 percent headroom gives a target of roughly 495W, which points directly at the 500W SA-500VCM. Its five zones also map neatly onto the four areas in this example, leaving one spare for a future extension.

Choosing the 350W model instead would technically work at lower volume, but it would be running near its limit whenever the assembly area is in use — exactly when clean, intelligible speech matters most.

Why headroom matters

An amplifier driven to its rated output has nothing left for peaks. Speech is full of peaks — consonants, raised voices, the start of an announcement — and when the amplifier runs out of headroom those peaks clip. Clipping is both audibly harsh and unusually hard on speakers, because it delivers sustained energy that drivers are not designed to absorb.

The same logic applies to heat. An amplifier at 60 percent of its rating runs cool and lasts; one at 95 percent runs hot continuously.

Matching passive 8 ohm speakers

Low-impedance speakers work differently: there is no tap, and one amplifier channel drives one cabinet. Here you match the amplifier's 8 ohm rating to the cabinet's rated power, again with headroom.

A 150W PS-08 is well served by an amplifier delivering around 150W to 200W into 8 ohms. A 600W SH-15 subwoofer needs a substantially larger amplifier, and should have its own channel with a crossover so the full-range cabinets are high-passed.

Do not forget the cable

A correctly sized amplifier can still be undermined by undersized cable, particularly on long runs. Use oxygen-free copper, and step up to 1.5 sq.mm rather than 1.0 sq.mm for long branches, higher total power or any low-impedance wiring.

Common questions

01How much bigger than my speaker load should the amplifier be?

Around 20 to 30 percent. If the total of your speaker taps is 380W, aim for an amplifier of roughly 480W to 500W. That leaves headroom for peaks and keeps the amplifier running cool.

02What happens if the amplifier is too small?

It will clip on peaks, which sounds harsh and reduces speech intelligibility exactly when you need it. Sustained clipping is also one of the more common causes of speaker damage.

03Can an amplifier be too powerful for my speakers?

On a 100V line system, no — each speaker only draws its tap setting regardless of how large the amplifier is. On a low-impedance system, an amplifier much larger than the cabinet's rating can damage it if driven hard, so match them more closely there.

04Should the subwoofer share an amplifier with the main speakers?

Give it its own channel. A subwoofer draws far more power than the full-range cabinets, and using a crossover so the mains are high-passed lets both play louder and cleaner.
