Wired vs Wireless Microphones, and UHF vs VHF

Two decisions in one guide: cable or radio, and if radio, why every professional system is UHF.

There are really only two questions here. Does the person holding the microphone need to move? And if they do, what kind of wireless system should they be using?

The first has a simple answer. The second is where most of the confusion lives, so this guide covers both.

When wired is the better choice

A wired microphone has no battery to go flat mid-session, no frequency to coordinate with anything else in the building, and nothing that can be interfered with. It is also considerably cheaper for the same audio quality. Where the speaker stays at a lectern, a table or a fixed position on stage, wired is simply the more reliable engineering decision.

The range covers every fixed-position format: handheld dynamics such as the SYS-ND86 for stage and karaoke, gooseneck units such as the SYS-E66 with its cardioid capsule and touch on/off for conference rooms, table units such as the unidirectional SYS-D27, and headset and lavalier condensers on cables from 1 m to 6 m.

When wireless earns its cost

Movement is the whole justification. A teacher walking between desks, a trainer working a room, a presenter using a whiteboard, a performer on a stage — none of those work on a cable, and no amount of careful cable management changes that.

The secondary benefit is safety and tidiness. In a hall with an audience, a microphone cable across the floor is a trip hazard and a nuisance to gaffer down before every event.

  • Audience areas where cable would cross a walkway — wireless.
  • Budget-constrained fixed installation — wired.

UHF vs VHF: why this matters

Wireless microphones transmit on radio, and the band they use determines how well they behave. VHF is the lower band. It is cheaper to build for, but the spectrum is crowded with other services, the antennas need to be physically longer, and dropouts and interference are common.

UHF sits higher up, where there is far more usable spectrum. That means more systems can operate simultaneously without colliding, antennas are short enough to be practical, and interference from other equipment is much less of a problem. It is the professional standard, and every wireless system in the Syskonics range is UHF — running from 610 MHz up to 865.6 MHz depending on model.

Reading a wireless specification

Three numbers tell you most of what you need. Channel count determines how many systems can coexist — the SYS-222 and SYS-222L offer 32 selectable channels, while the SYS-333 and SYS-444 offer 16. Operating range tells you how far the transmitter can get from the receiver: 30–50 m on the compact systems, 40–80 m on the SYS-490 series, and 80–100 m on the SYS-555 and SYS-9900 models. Battery life sets how long a session can run — typically up to 8 hours, and around 12 hours on the SYS-1004H.

Published range figures assume clear line of sight. Walls, metal structure and a full audience all reduce them, so specify with margin and keep the receiver where it can see the performing area.

Choosing the transmitter format

Handheld suits vocals, karaoke and any situation where the microphone is passed between speakers. Headset keeps a constant distance from the mouth regardless of head movement, which gives the most consistent level and frees both hands — the right choice for teaching and fitness. Lavalier is the least visible, which suits video and formal presentation, but level varies more as the wearer turns their head.

Where a venue needs both, combination systems such as the SYS-666UHL and SYS-9900-UHL provide a handheld and a lapel transmitter on a single receiver.

Common questions

01Is UHF better than VHF for wireless microphones?

For professional use, yes. UHF has much more available spectrum, supports more simultaneous systems and suffers far less interference. VHF is cheaper but is prone to dropouts in any environment with competing radio traffic.

02How many wireless microphones can work in the same room?

Each needs its own clear frequency, so the limit is the channel count and the local RF environment. With 16 or 32 selectable channels there is normally room for several systems. For a fixed multi-microphone setup, a four-channel receiver such as the SYS-1004H is more practical than four separate units.

03Do wireless microphones sound worse than wired ones?

Modern UHF systems are close enough that the capsule matters far more than the transmission. The published frequency response on these systems runs 40 Hz to 18 kHz, which is well beyond what speech requires.

04Can I use my existing wired headset with a wireless transmitter?

If it terminates in mini XLR, yes — that is what the connector is for. The SYS-W10 headset, SYS-M5 lavalier and SYS-700 ear hook are all built with mini XLR specifically to plug into a bodypack.
